Born into a poor family in Périgord, Peter Thomas joined the Carmelites and made his name as a preacher. Avignon sent him on diplomatic missions to Venice, Milan, Serbia and Constantinople, where he worked tirelessly to bring the Greek and Latin Churches closer. Named Latin Patriarch of Constantinople, he accompanied Peter I of Cyprus on his expedition to Alexandria and died at the Carmelite friary of Famagusta — the sources are divided between a wound received at Alexandria and a chill caught at Christmas 1365. Beatified in 1609 by Paul V, he was canonised in 1628 by Urban VIII.
