Born at Gondrexange in Lorraine, Odile Baumgarten entered the Daughters of Charity in 1775 and was put in charge of the pharmacy at the hospital of Saint-Jean in Angers. In 1793 and 1794 the Terror struck Anjou harder than almost anywhere else. Arrested on 19 January 1794 for refusing the Liberty-Equality oath and dissuading the other sisters from taking it, she was shot on 1 February at the Field of Martyrs at Avrillé, chained to Sister Marie-Anne Vaillot. John Paul II beatified her on 19 February 1984 with ninety-eight companions, ninety-nine martyrs of Angers in all.
