An early companion of an order’s founder, he received from him charge of a whole province and wept whenever he said mass.
Born around 1195 in the Tricastin, he joined Dominic de Guzmán in Languedoc during the preaching against the Cathars, before the Order of Preachers even existed. He was one of the sixteen brothers who in 1217 received Dominic's commission dispersing his handful of companions across Europe, a gesture his contemporaries thought reckless. Sent to Paris, he founded the convent of Saint-Jacques, then in 1221 became the first provincial of Provence, charged with planting the order throughout the Midi. The testimonies gathered at Dominic's canonisation, his own among them, show him travelling with the founder on his last journeys. Jordan of Saxony records that he could not celebrate mass without weeping, so much so that he was advised to restrain himself. He died around 1230 at the Cistercian abbey of Bouchet, where he was preaching a retreat. His cult was confirmed in 1881. He is commemorated on 6 September.
