Saint Marcellus I was the 30th Bishop of Rome, succeeding Saint Marcellinus. His pontificate, from 308 to 309, was brief but essential for the reconstruction of the Roman Christian community after the fierce Diocletianic Persecution. He undertook to reorganize the Church, notably by creating new presbyteral titles to administer parishes and by organizing cemeteries. His pastoral zeal and strict measures concerning the lapsi (those who had renounced their faith during the persecution) earned him the opposition of some lax Christians and, ultimately, the sentence of Emperor Maxentius, who condemned him to the catabulum, the public stable of Rome. There he died in 309, in the service of the beasts and clothed in a hair shirt; Lucina took up his body and buried it in the cemetery of Priscilla. He is venerated as a martyr.
