Martin de Porres

Saint Martin de Porres, born in 1579 in Lima, Peru, was the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed black woman. Despite the discrimination of his time, from an early age, he showed profound compassion for the poor and the sick. Joining the Dominican Order as a lay brother, he dedicated himself entirely to the service of others, healing bodies and souls with exemplary humility. He was known for his gifts of healing, bilocation, his ability to communicate with animals, and his devotion to the most destitute, whether they were indigenous, black, or white. He founded an orphanage and a children's hospital. Martin de Porres is a shining example of charity and selfless service. He died in 1639 and was canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII.
