Merovingian princess who became abbess near Trier, correspondent of Saint Boniface.

Daughter of Hugobert and Irmina according to the received reconstruction — a Trier charter of doubtful reliability makes her a Merovingian king's daughter — Adela was married and widowed young, and around 700 founded the monastery of Pfalzel on the Moselle upstream of Trier, where she took the veil with her community. Liudger relates that Boniface, apostle of Germany, stopped there and heard a child read, Gregory, the abbess's grandson: he took him along, and Gregory became abbot of Utrecht. A letter from Ælfflæd of Whitby, addressed to "Adolana", commends to her a pilgrim bound for Rome. Her cult has remained alive in the diocese of Trier.
