A magnate of Austrasia, married and a father, Arnulf ran the palace at Metz when he was elected bishop around 614, his wife entering a monastery. With Pepin of Landen he governed Austrasia for the young Dagobert and was one of the architects of Frankish unity. His son Ansegisel married Pepin's daughter: from that marriage descend the Carolingians, and Charlemagne counted Arnulf among his forebears. Around 629 he abandoned everything to live as a hermit in the Vosges, where he died.
