Gregory the Great

Born in Rome around 540 into a senatorial family, Gregory I served as Prefect of the city before renouncing his career to become a Benedictine monk. Elected Pope in 590, his pontificate was marked by intense pastoral, diplomatic, and reformatory activity. He is renowned for his theological and moral writings, especially the *Pastoral Care* (Liber regulae pastoralis), which became a fundamental guide for bishops. He initiated the sending of evangelizing missions, such as that of Augustine of Canterbury to England. He also played a major role in organizing the Roman liturgy and giving impetus to the chant that now bears his name (Gregorian chant). He is one of the four great Doctors of the Latin Church, recognized for his piety, intelligence, and sense of governance.
