Silouan the Athonite

Born Symeon Ivanovich Antonov in 1866 to a pious peasant family in Russia, Silouan was a man of remarkable physical strength but initially possessed a violent character. At 26, after hearing the voice of the Mother of God, he left his worldly life for Mount Athos, where he entered the Saint Panteleimon Monastery in 1892. His early monastic years were marked by intense joy, followed by profound spiritual trials, particularly temptations of pride and despair. In great distress, he received a decisive illumination from Christ: 'Keep your mind in hell, and do not despair.' This saying transformed his life, leading him to a life of gentleness, humility, and continuous prayer for the entire world. He held various positions in the monastery while maintaining an intense prayer life, even at night, until his death on September 24, 1938. His writings, compiled by Archimandrite Sophrony, are a major source of inspiration for Orthodox spirituality, emphasizing unconditional love and divine mercy.
