The 30th Pope of the Catholic Church, his pontificate was marked by the reorganization of the Church after the Great Persecution, ending with his exile and death as a martyr.
Saint Marcellus I was the 30th Bishop of Rome, succeeding Saint Marcellinus. His pontificate, from 308 to 309, was brief but essential for the reconstruction of the Roman Christian community after the fierce Diocletianic Persecution. He undertook to reorganize the Church, notably by creating new presbyteral titles to administer parishes and by organizing cemeteries. His pastoral zeal and strict measures concerning the lapsi (those who had renounced their faith during the persecution) earned him the opposition of some lax Christians and, ultimately, exile ordered by Emperor Maxentius. He died in exile in 309 and is venerated as a martyr.
