Gemma Galgani, born on March 12, 1878, in Camigliano (Lucca) and who died on April 11, 1903, in Lucca, was an Italian lay mystic, known for having received the stigmata and for her visions of her guardian angel and Christ. Orphaned at a young age, she lived a life of intense piety, offering her sufferings for the conversion of sinners. She was beatified in 1933 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1940. Her profound love for Jesus Christ and her devotion to His suffering make her an emblematic figure of 20th and 21st-century spirituality.
