Vitus

Saint Vitus was a young Sicilian martyr. Tradition holds that he was persecuted under Emperor Diocletian along with his tutor Modestus and his nurse Crescentia. Accused of practicing Christianity, he underwent various tortures, including being thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil, from which he was said to have been miraculously spared. He eventually died from his wounds. His veneration spread throughout Europe, especially in Germanic and Slavic regions, and he is included among the Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked particularly against epilepsy, St. Vitus' Dance, and for dancers and actors.
