Saint Paulinus of Aquileia (c. 730s – 802) was one of the most important intellectuals of his time. Born in Friuli, he taught grammar there before being summoned around 776 to the court of Charlemagne, of whom he became one of the chief advisors. Appointed Patriarch of Aquileia around 787, he played a crucial role in the Councils of Regensburg (792) and Frankfurt (794) against the Adoptionist heresy. He also authored several theological treatises, poems, and hymns. His contribution to the liturgical and educational reform under Charlemagne was considerable.
