The codex

The Codex Sanctorum gathers the lives of the saints. Each entry gives a life, the date of its feast, what marks the saint out in an image, and the places where they are venerated. The site and the app read one and the same codex.

How it is made

Every entry is written from named sources, and the text separates what is established from what tradition relates. Where two sources disagree, the entry decides and says so, rather than leaving the hesitation in the sentence. The codex is reread and corrected continually.

Sources

Each entry lists at the foot of the page the sources it was written from. These are the ones that come up most often:

• Nominis — the saints’ calendar of the Catholic Church in France
• Wikipédia — and Wikimedia Commons
• Santi e Beati — the Italian hagiographical encyclopaedia
• Ökumenisches Heiligenlexikon — for the German-speaking lands
• Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani — the Italian scholarly biographies

Images

Public-domain images are credited on the entry where they appear. The others were produced for the codex.

What this site records

Nothing. No cookies, no analytics, no account, no banner to accept. The pages load no external resource.
