Peter Damian
A reforming Benedictine monk and cardinal in the circle of Pope Leo IX. He was a Doctor of the Church, known for his writings against corruption and for ecclesiastical reform.

Born in Ravenna in 1007, Peter Damian was orphaned and raised in difficult circumstances before receiving a brilliant education. He became a professor, then a Camaldolese monk (a branch of the Benedictine order) at the monastery of Fonte Avellana, of which he became prior. A central figure in the 11th-century Gregorian Reform, he was an ardent defender of monastic life and clerical purity, notably fighting against simony and Nicolaitism (clerical marriage). Pope Stephen IX appointed him cardinal-bishop of Ostia in 1057. He was an influential papal legate and advisor to successive popes, contributing to Church reform through his numerous writings and actions. He died in Faenza in 1072. Declared a Doctor of the Church in 1828 by Pope Leo XII, he is celebrated for his doctrine, piety, and reformist zeal.
