Stanislaus of Szczepanów

Stanislaus of Szczepanów (born circa 1030 in Szczepanów, near Kraków – died April 11, 1079, in Kraków) was Bishop of Kraków from 1072 until his death. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and is the patron saint of Poland. His conflict with King Bolesław II the Bold, which culminated in his assassination by the king himself or on his orders, is a central event in medieval Polish history and his hagiography. This martyrdom was interpreted as a defense of justice and ecclesiastical authority against the abuse of royal power.
