Bede the Venerable

Bede the Venerable, born around 672-673 in Northumbria (modern-day England), was an English Benedictine monk, theologian, historian, and exegete. He spent most of his life at the monasteries of Monkwearmouth and especially Jarrow. Considered the 'Father of English History,' his most famous work is the 'Ecclesiastical History of the English People,' a crucial source for the history of Anglo-Saxon England and the Christianization of the British Isles. Bede was also a prolific scholar, writing on diverse subjects from science (calendar calculation, tides) to poetry, but primarily focusing on biblical commentaries and theological treatises. His erudition, piety, and contribution to the knowledge of his time earned him the title 'the Venerable' shortly after his death. He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1899, acknowledging the significance of his theological teachings.
