Costanza Starace was born at Castellammare di Stabia in 1845 and had to break off her studies, her health failing. She professed in the Servite third order in 1867 under the name Mary Magdalene of the Passion, and began by gathering the young girls of her quarter to teach them catechism and a trade. From that small group was born in 1869 the congregation of the Compassionist Sisters Servants of Mary, devoted to educating poor girls and nursing the sick. She led it for more than fifty years, ill herself all her life, and was beatified in 2007.
