Portrait — Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)

Born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Skopje (now North Macedonia, then Ottoman Empire), she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland. Sent to India, she taught in Calcutta before experiencing a profound call to serve the poorest and the dying. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation dedicated to the sick, the dying, orphans, and the destitute. Her work of compassion and selfless dedication earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She became a global symbol of charity and solidarity. She was beatified in 2003 by Pope John Paul II and canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.
