Dominic de Guzmán

Born around 1170 in Caleruega, Castile, Dominic de Guzmán initially served as a canon regular in Osma. His life took a decisive turn upon discovering the Albigensian heresy during a journey through Languedoc. From then on, he dedicated himself to itinerant preaching, combining doctrinal rigor with a humble lifestyle, in stark contrast to the opulence of the bishops of his time, aiming to bring the misguided back to the Catholic faith. In 1215, he founded the Order of Preachers, better known as the Dominicans, in Toulouse, with papal approval from Honorius III in 1216. This innovative order was dedicated to preaching truth (Veritas) and combating heresy through study, contemplation, and poverty. Dominic sent his friars across Europe to spread the Gospel. He is often associated with the devotion of the Rosary, although his exact role in its origin is a subject of historical debate. He died in Bologna on August 6, 1221, leaving behind a flourishing order and a profound influence on the Church.
