Laurence O'Toole

Born in 1128 in Ireland, Laurence O'Toole was the youngest son of a Leinster chieftain. Given as a hostage to the King of Leinster, he was later freed and received monastic education. In 1153, he was elected abbot of Glendalough, where he worked to restore monastic discipline. In 1161, he was unanimously elected Archbishop of Dublin, becoming the first native-born archbishop of the city. He undertook profound ecclesiastical reforms, introducing the Augustinian Canons Regular to the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Christ Church). During the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169, he played a crucial role as a mediator and diplomat between the Irish and the English, protecting the people of Dublin and working for peace. He died in 1180 in Eu, Normandy, while on a diplomatic mission to King Henry II of England. He was canonized in 1225 by Pope Honorius III.
