Saint Quentin was, according to tradition, a Roman citizen of senatorial origin, who came to evangelize Gaul, particularly the Vermandois region. He was arrested under Emperor Maximian, cruelly tortured, and then beheaded near the Somme river. His body was thrown into the river but was reportedly recovered later and buried at Augusta Viromanduorum, where a basilica arose; the town has borne the name of Saint-Quentin ever since.
