Anthony the Great

Saint Anthony the Great is an iconic figure of Christian monasticism, born in Egypt around 251. After hearing the Gospel, he sold all his possessions and retreated into the desert to live a life of intense asceticism and prayer. He was assailed by numerous demonic temptations, his famous 'tentations of Saint Anthony,' but his perseverance and unwavering faith made him a model of holiness and spiritual resistance. Although he lived as a hermit, his reputation for wisdom and holiness attracted many disciples, forming the first monastic communities and establishing him as the 'Father of Monks.' His biography, written by Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, had a considerable influence on the development of Eastern and Western monasticism.
