Honoratus of Lérins
A 5th-century Gallo-Roman aristocrat, he founded a famous abbey on a small island on the French Riviera, which became a major center of spirituality and culture in the West.

Born into a high-ranking Gallo-Roman senatorial family, Honoratus chose a life of renunciation and spirituality. After travels in the East with his brother Venantius, he founded the Abbey of Lérins around 410, on an island off the coast of Cannes. This monastery quickly became a major intellectual and spiritual center, educating many bishops and saints. Despite his love for contemplative life, he was elected Bishop of Arles around 427-428, a charge he undertook with humility and dedication until his death shortly thereafter.
