Saint Paulinus of Aquileia (c. 730s – 802) was one of the most important intellectuals of his time. Born in Italy, he was educated at Charlemagne's court and became one of his chief advisors. Appointed Patriarch of Aquileia around 787, he played a crucial role in the Councils of Regensburg (792) and Frankfurt (794) against the Adoptionist heresy. He also authored several theological treatises, poems, and hymns. His contribution to the liturgical and educational reform under Charlemagne was considerable.
