Angela of Foligno, born around 1248, initially led a worldly and sinful life. Following the deaths of her husband, children, and mother, she experienced a radical conversion in 1285. She joined the Franciscan Third Order and became a prominent mystic, dictating her spiritual experiences and visions to her confessor, Brother Arnaldo. Her writings, compiled in the 'Book of Visions and Instructions' (Memoriale), are considered one of the most important mystical texts of the Middle Ages, describing a progressive spiritual journey towards divine union, marked by a profound identification with Christ's suffering.
