Gertrude of Nivelles
A 7th-century abbess in Austrasia, she was known for her hospitality to pilgrims and Irish monks. Today, she is the patron saint of cats.

Saint Gertrude of Nivelles (c. 628 – March 17, 659) was the daughter of Pepin of Landen, Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, and Saint Itta. From an early age, she displayed great piety and refused an arranged marriage, preferring to dedicate herself to God. After her father's death, her mother Itta founded a double monastery in Nivelles (present-day Belgium) for both men and women. Gertrude became its second abbess around 652, succeeding her mother. Under her leadership, the Abbey of Nivelles became a flourishing center of learning and spirituality. She welcomed many Irish monks, including Saint Foillan, and worked to acquire books and relics. Her life was marked by rigorous asceticism and mystical visions. Exhausted by her austerities and the duties of her office, she resigned as abbess in 658, a year before her death on March 17, 659. Her veneration spread rapidly after her death, and she is particularly invoked as the patroness of cats, travelers, and the mentally ill.
