Hyacinth of Poland

Born in 1185 in Kamień Śląski, Silesia, Hyacinth Odrowąż came from a noble Polish family. After studying in Kraków, Prague, and Bologna, he became a canon in Kraków. In 1218, during a trip to Rome with his uncle, the Bishop of Kraków, he met Saint Dominic de Guzmán and was profoundly inspired by his nascent order. He received the Dominican habit from Saint Dominic himself, becoming one of the first Polish friars. Sent by Saint Dominic, Hyacinth was tasked with establishing the Order of Preachers in Poland. He founded major Dominican convents in Kraków (where he is buried), Sandomierz, Wrocław, Gdańsk, and significantly, in Kyiv (modern-day Ukraine), thus extending the order's influence throughout Eastern Europe. He traveled immense distances, preaching the Gospel and establishing communities. He is traditionally depicted carrying a monstrance and a statue of the Virgin Mary, referencing miracles during a Mongol invasion where he reportedly saved these sacred objects from desecration. He died on August 15, 1257, in Kraków and was canonized by Pope Clement VIII in 1594.
