George the Martyr

Saint George is one of the most venerated martyr saints in Christianity, although his biography is largely legendary and not strongly supported by direct historical evidence. He is said to have been a Roman officer of Greek origin from Cappadocia, born around 275-280 AD, and martyred under Emperor Diocletian, likely in Lydda (modern-day Lod, Israel) in 303 AD. His most famous legend depicts him slaying a dragon to save a princess, a symbolic narrative of the triumph of good over evil and Christianity over paganism. His cult spread very early, and he is particularly revered in the East as "Great Martyr" and in the Western Church as a patron saint of numerous countries, orders, and professions.
