Saint Raymond of Penyafort (c. 1175 – January 6, 1275) was a prominent Catalan canon lawyer and Dominican priest. He studied and taught canon law in Bologna before joining the Dominican Order in 1222. He is best known for compiling the Decretals of Gregory IX, a fundamental collection of canon law that remained the law of the Catholic Church for centuries. He also served briefly as Master General of the Order of Preachers (1238-1240), during which time he revised the order's constitutions. A famous miracle attributed to him is having sailed from Majorca to Barcelona on his cloak. He is the patron saint of canon lawyers.
